TMC condemns ‘arrogance in uniform’, 'double standards' as MPs dragged during protest

The Trinamool Congress on Friday strongly condemned the alleged treatment of its Members of Parliament during a protest outside the Union Home Minister’s office, accusing the BJP-led central government of undermining democratic rights. In a sharp statement, the party said elected representatives were dragged on the streets for exercising their constitutional right to protest.

Calling the incident “shameful and unacceptable,” the Trinamool Congress alleged that the actions of the Delhi Police reflected “arrogance in uniform” rather than lawful enforcement. The party asserted that India is a democracy, not the private property of the BJP, and warned against the misuse of authority to suppress opposition voices.

The party further alleged a stark double standard in how protests are handled, claiming BJP leaders are afforded privileges during demonstrations, while opposition MPs are subjected to detention and humiliation. According to the Trinamool Congress, this approach exposes the ruling party’s idea of democracy as one based on obedience rather than dissent.

Emphasising mutual respect, the party stated that dignity in a democracy cannot depend on power, position, or office. It asserted that citizens exercise their rights by constitutional guarantee, not at the mercy of authority figures.

Concluding its statement, the Trinamool Congress reaffirmed its commitment to democratic values, saying no government, party, or Home Minister has the right to decide who deserves dignity, tolerance, and respect in India’s democratic framework.
